The Registered Nurse provides care and counseling of persons or in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems. The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient/resident, whether an individual, family, group, or community. (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses).

• The ICU Nurse is a professional Registered Nurse (RN) who provides high quality, evidence based care for adult and geriatric Veteran patients who are critically ill and require comprehensive intensive care. The ICU RN provides care to Veterans who commonly present with multi-system, co-morbidities requiring a multitude of therapeutic modalities including continuous cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation, invasive hemodynamic management, ventilator support, and pharmacological interventions. The RN in the ICU functions as part of an interdisciplinary team and is accountable for direct care to a defined number of patients for his/her shift. The nurse functions at all times as a patient advocate and performs his/her cares and duties with the utmost integrity adhering to policies and procedures and following all protocols, guidelines and standards of practice (SOP). On a daily basis the nurse may be exposed to infected patients, contaminated materials, patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders and appropriate protocols must be followed. When functioning in the role of ICU Charge/Team Leader, the RN demonstrates leadership, experience, and facilitation of patient flow during his/her shift. The Charge Nurse (CN) assists in the patient care and quality of delivered care by staff. The CN will assess staffing variances throughout the shift and work collaboratively with the Nurse of the Day/ staffing office and unit Nurse Manager or Assistant Nurse Manager to ensure the unit is staffed appropriately for patient's needs. The CN ensures timely patient flow by coordinating admissions, transfers and discharges on the unit. This includes ensuring that staff provide timely nursing care and adhere to policies and procedures and follow all protocols, guidelines and standards of practice (SOP) by monitoring and notifying the Nurse Manager or designee of practice issues, while providing positive and constructive instruction / feedback as appropriate. When functioning in the role of the ICU Resource/Rapid Response Team Nurse, the RN is recognized for their clinical expertise and knowledge in critical care and serves as a role model and hands on resource for staff. The Resource RN is able to care for the most critical of patients within the ICU and demonstrates a strong ability to shift priorities based on patient, staff, physician and unit needs. He/she has the ability to function in the most stressful of situations and serves as the back-up to the Charge Nurse in responding and coordinating care during Code Blue and Rapid Response notifications. Preferred Experience: BSN or MSN preferred. >2 years critical care RN experience preferred. Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCRN) or other critical care certification(s) preferred. Work Schedule: Day or night shift . 20 hours per week . Working weekends and holidays. Days will be determined based on the needs of the facility.
