The Milwaukee VAMC is looking for a Registered Nurse (RN) in their Community Homes Unit. This is a long-term stay program that serves medically and psychologically stable veterans and provides medical care for an extended time. The RN provides wound care/healing, medical and geriatric related treatment, and veteran and family education. It is a 30 bed unit that is divided into 3 homes with 10 beds each. Veterans are mostly long-term care and reside in the homes, outside the main hospital.

  • RNs and supporting staff are the primary caregivers. Veterans range from being full independent to veterans that need full care, and length of stay is determined by goals of care. Nursing care provided is veteran focused and uses a team model. The patient population is dynamic and complex providing opportunities for nursing staff to experience a vast amount of diagnosis assessment skills. Duties include, but are not limited to: Assume responsibility for the coordination of care. Administer medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influence care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Provide care and services appropriate to the age of the patients being served, considering cognitive, emotional, and chronological maturation of the patient.
