Wound Care Nurse

Position Summary:  The Wound Care Nurse works collaboratively with the Wound Care Coordinator to support pressure injury prevention protocols, inpatient wound and ostomy consultations, staff education and events, quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance. This position serves as a clinical resource for bedside nursing staff while collaborating with physicians and interdisciplinary team members to implement evidence-based treatment plans. The Wound Care Nurse reviews clinical documentation for accuracy and completeness, validating pressure injury staging and Present on Admission status to meet CMS requirements. The position promotes best practices in wound care, skin integrity management, and pressure injury prevention efforts to improve patient outcomes and organizational performance.   Qualifications:   Education:

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Experience

• Minimum of one (1) year of acute care nursing experience preferred.

  Licensure/Certification/Registration

• Current South Carolina licensure as a Registered Nurse (SCLLR) in good standing required.
• Wound care certification must be obtained within one (1) year of employment.
• Ostomy certification preferred.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Recommends appropriate wound care treatments, support surfaces, and prevention strategies.
• Provides education to patients and their families.
• Provides documentation feedback to Physicians and nursing staff.
• Attends and actively participate in Skin Team Committee meetings.
• Participates in monthly pressure injury prevalence surveys, surveillance activities, chart audits, and data collection.
• Identifies opportunities to reduce hospital-acquired pressure injuries.
• Participates in product trials and patient case studies.
• Provides real-time bedside education and coaching to nursing staff regarding:
  • Wound assessment and staging
  • Documentation requirements
  • Dressing selection and application
  • Moisture management
  • Offloading, repositioning, and support surface utilization
  • Ostomy care
  • Pressure injury prevention
• Assists with staff orientation, competency validations, and ongoing wound care education.
• Assists with planning and coordinating quarterly wound care and pressure injury prevention educational events.
• Greet all patients and their accompanying family members when applicable and provide exemplary customer service.
• Work effectively and collaboratively with colleagues, physicians, and department heads.
• Effectively utilize strong organizational skills.
• Consistently display effective verbal communication skills.  
• Proficient understanding and use of technology/PC skills required.
• Regularly exercise independent judgement.
• Completes other duties as assigned by department leadership.
