Orange Coast College (OCC) is seeking equity-minded individuals for a classified employee role as a Registered Nurse under the Student Services Wing, as part of the Student Health Services Department.

Department Specifics:  About OCC Student Health Center

The Orange Coast College Student Health Services' mission is to strengthen student learning, retention, and success by supporting the physical, emotional, and social well-being of students through accessible, high-quality health services and programs.  Recognizing that wellness is essential to academic success, the Student Health Center provides optimum, short-term episodic, and emergency medical and mental health services to the college community in a confidential, inclusive environment and with sensitivity to cultural differences and individual needs.

The Student Health Center provides medical and mental health services to Orange Coast College students and emergency triage and health resources to the campus community.  Licensed Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, and Mental Health Providers provide medical and mental health care to students. Primary care or specialized care outside the scope of Student Health Services is referred to appropriate community providers.  Communicable disease assessments and compliance with Public Health policies are implemented to support the health and safety of the campus community.  Health Center efforts include health education, community collaboration, and strengthening community partnerships. 

The Registered Nurse is part of the Medical Services Team and works closely with Health Center nurses, medical providers, front administrative, and back-office medical assistant support staff to ensure appropriate and timely nursing care for students.  The Health Center's medical and mental health teams work collaboratively to support holistic student-centered care.  Campus outreach and preventative health efforts are encouraged.

Summary
Organizes, coordinates, and administers health services that enhance the health status and education of adult students and staff. Provides professional nursing services, including case management, to a diverse population of students including those with medical conditions and disabilities. Collaborates with other healthcare providers and agencies to coordinate healthcare.

The Registered Nurse is a fully qualified and licensed patient care professional. Advancement to this position requires compliance with the stated qualifications, state laws for licensing, and a demonstrated ability to integrate health education, diagnostic, record management, and urgent care services. The Registered Nurse is qualified to observe and document patterns in communicable disease and public health issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions, and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following kinds of duties, as assigned:
1. Identifies students with health problems that interfere with effective learning. Employs case finding, screening, interviewing, and observation techniques as well as analysis of health records to assess student health status. Refers students with particular needs to higher level health professionals and/or community resources. 
2. Compiles health and demographic information from students, noting health history and population health trends including social, emotional, and environmental aspects. 
3. Provides urgent nursing care for ill and injured students. Provides District Student Accident Insurance policy for appropriate students. Refers patients to local healthcare providers for more advanced treatment. 
4. Provides initial mental health assessment, intake, crisis screening, and intervention. Collaborates with behavioral health providers to manage care, make referrals, and stabilize patients. 
5. Provides registered nursing care services as mandated by law, as per current standing orders, and as prescribed by a Student Health Medical Provider. 
6. Evaluates and documents the progress of individual care plans and therapeutic programs and makes modifications within scope of practice. 
7. May coordinate and participate in implementing immunization programs. Administers immunizations according to medical protocols and safe and appropriate guidelines. 
8. Conducts health assessments and physical examinations in accordance with community college health mandates. 
9. Participates in implementing programs directed at control and case management of communicable diseases on campus. Collaborates with County Health to case manage communicable disease cases on campus. Conducts health education and health promotion. 
10. Confers, participates, and cooperates with private physicians, community healthcare providers and public agencies in formulating appropriate campus health policies and resolution of student and community health issues. 
11. Facilitates student access to internal school and external community resources for healthcare. Develops resources as appropriate to meet student health and wellness needs. 
12. Maintains professional competence by participating in required in-service education and health education programs designed to maintain healthcare credentials. 
13. Performs health education and counseling to students. Participates with other healthcare professionals to develop emergency and individualized care plans and provides referral to other healthcare professionals. Follows up to monitor progress and compliance with care plans. 
14. Ensures that health records are maintained up to date. Documents all encounters. Writes nursing notes and participates in patient case management as required. 
15. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
16. Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics. Knowledge and Skills
1. The position requires a full professional knowledge of the theories, protocols, practices, and techniques of modern nursing. 
2. Requires a working knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations governing nursing in an educational environment as well as applicable federal and state laws for working with students. 
3. Requires special knowledge of nursing practice and working with students with disabilities. 
4. Requires knowledge of and skill at using computer-aided applications for documenting work activity and accessing student information. 
5. Requires well-developed human relations skills to work cooperatively with professional staff and students, to communicate technical and sensitive concepts to others, and to conduct in-service education. 
6. Requires sufficient math skills to record measurements and statistics. 
7. Requires sufficient language writing skills to prepare diagnostic reports.

Education and Experience
Requires an Associate’s degree in nursing plus two years of successful nursing experience in a public health, urgent care clinic, school, or hospital setting. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position. Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in nursing; nursing experience in a community or college/ university health setting.

Licenses and Certificates
Requires a valid California driver license. 
Requires a valid California Registered Nurse License. 
Requires a valid Healthcare Provider CPR/AED certificate. 
Preferred: Public Health Nurse (PHN) Certificate. 

Working Conditions
Work is performed in a clinic exam room and office environment where health and safety considerations exist such as exposure to communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, and infection. Work may also be performed on campus.

(ON-CAMPUS - in-person position)  
This is a permanent, categorically funded,  full-time, 40 hours/week, 10-months per year classified position. The District reserves the right to extend, modify, or eliminate this position based upon available funds. The normal hours of work will be Monday - Friday 8:00 am -  5:00 pm, with the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends, if necessary, to meet the department's needs.  The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee. (Salary Schedule:  E0-122)
