Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse Midwife)

Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse Midwife) is a professional level position responsible for completing physical assessments, diagnosis, and treatment under protocol for patients and within legal scope of practice in the Family Planning and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Clinic. Refers clients as necessary and maintains client records in a clinic setting.

Essential Job Functions

Clinical Care & Patient Services

• Provide specialized gynecological and reproductive health care, including comprehensive reproductive exams. Refer to resources as appropriate. 
• Diagnose and treat sexually transmitted infections; perform clinical breast exams and gender-specific assessments.
• Obtain medical histories, conduct physical exams, diagnose, and prescribe medications.
• Provide contraceptive counseling and perform procedures (e.g., IUDs, implants, wet preps).
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work.
• Review abnormal lab results for quality assurance and guide RN treatment under standing orders.
• Make referrals, and ensure appropriate follow-up.
• Educate clients on general health topics and available program services.
• Deliver care that is equitable, client-centered, culturally and linguistically appropriate, trauma-informed, timely, efficient, and inclusive.

Program Oversight & Coordination

• Review and complete documentation to support service authorization, care coordination, and follow-up.
• Prepare and review patient consults with the Medical Officer.
• Create and update program protocols and standing orders in collaboration with the Medical Officer.
• Certified (or willing to become certified) in long-acting reversible contraceptive insertion.

Public Health & Community Engagement

• Support public health outreach and resource referrals.
• Participate in emergency response training and drills using the incident command structure.
• Stay informed on emerging public health issues, legislation, and regulatory guidelines.
• Promote an equitable and inclusive workplace culture.

Professional Development & Team Support

• Engage in continuing education to ensure evidence-based care.
• Assist in training new employees.
• Perform other duties as needed to support program and agency goals.

• Responds to public health emergencies, as needed, and directed, aside from typical duties and schedule for the position.
• Contributes to developing and implementation of goals of the agency strategic, performance management, workforce development and quality improvement plans.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge

• Principles and practices of public health nursing.
• Legal scope of practice for APRNs, including prescriptive authority.
• Colorado Family Planning and Title X requirements, including patient-centered care standards.
• Evidence-based approaches in reproductive and sexual health.
• Effective use of ICD 10 and CPT codes.

Skills

• Excellent verbal and written communication.
• Organization and efficiency in managing multiple responsibilities.
• Timely and accurate documentation in paper documentation and Electronic Health Records (EHR).
• General proficiency with computer software programs, including keyboarding and EHR systems.

Qualifications | Requirements

Master’s degree in nursing from a graduate nursing school with certification in family, adult health, women’s health, or midwifery required. Must possess current licensure as a Colorado Registered Nurse and Colorado Advanced Practice Nurse. Must possess prescriptive authority. One year of work experience in family planning/women’s health care nursing at the advanced practice nurse level preferred. Title X and STI experience preferred. 

Fluency in writing, texting, and speaking English. Ability to write, text and speak fluently in Spanish is desired.

Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado photo identification card and be able to provide personal transportation for work-related purposes. Must obtain annual flu vaccination and any job specific immunizations. May be required to submit to a TB test. 

Work Environment | Physical Demands

Work is typically in an office setting. Work schedule is typically PRN up to 16 hours per week and is dependent on patient volume but may be required to work beyond normal work schedule on occasion. Clinic operates Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Work may require some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. May be required to lift and carry up to 49 pounds on an infrequent basis, lift and carry up to 20 pounds on a regular basis, climb stair, bend, reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects, and use fingers to perform routine medical procedures such as administer vaccines and insert contraceptive devices, operate computer or typewriter keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak fluently and to use normal or aided vision and hearing.

Work is subject to recurring and inflexible deadlines and frequent interruptions; may involve evening and weekend meetings/trainings and travel out of the area. 

Repetitive tasks and reoccurring deadlines are the norm and occasional out of town meeting/training may be required. May be called upon to respond to public health emergencies if needed.
