This is a (100%) full-time position involving the provision of Dermatology clinical care as well as supervision of dermatology residents. Such activities include, but are not limited to: diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic skin conditions; full-scope dermatology procedures including biopsies, cryotherapy, electrodesiccation and curettage (ED&C), intralesional injections, excisions, and dermoscopy; oversight of phototherapy services; inpatient consult services.
- Clinical Functions - Provides independent evaluation and management of a panel of patients with acute and chronic dermatologic conditions. - Perform new patient dermatology consultations, return visits, telephone/telehealth follow-up visits, and collaborate with referring providers. Establish comprehensive plans of care based on clinical findings and current standards of care. Establish mutual goals with patients and families. - Perform the full range of outpatient dermatologic procedures including, but not limited to: skin biopsies (shave, punch, excisional), cryotherapy, electrodesiccation and curettage (ED&C), intralesional corticosteroid injections, excision of benign and malignant lesions, dermoscopy, patch testing, and phototherapy oversight. - Prescribe medications based on patients' clinical status, accepted scientific guidelines, prescriptive authority, and ongoing evaluation of therapeutic response, including systemic agents, biologics, and immunosuppressants as clinically indicated. - Order and interpret diagnostic tests including, but not limited to, skin biopsies/pathology, laboratory studies, and appropriate radiology studies. - Collaborate with pharmacy regarding non-formulary and high-risk meds in order to provide safe and timely care. - Refer appropriately to other specialties as needed (e.g., General Surgery, ENT, Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Rheumatology, Ophthalmology, Dermatopathology). - Communicate findings and management plans clearly to patients, surrogates, and referring providers through timely, accurate documentation in VistA/CPRS/Oracle Health (Cerner) EHR. Education and Training - Serve as preceptor and educator for dermatology residents, medical students, rotating through the service under affiliation agreements with Washington University School of Medicine, Saint Louis University School of Medicine, and other affiliated institutions. - Participate in and deliver Grand Rounds, case conferences, journal clubs, and continuing medical education (CME) activities.
