VHA Physician Total Rewards. The incumbent serves as a Staff Dermatopathologist. The primary purpose of this position is to provide expert diagnostic evaluation of skin, hair, nail, and relevant mucosal biopsy specimens. The incumbent ensures the delivery of high-quality, accurate, and timely diagnostic reports to guide patient management. This role requires close collaboration with clinical dermatologists, oncologists, general pathologists, and surgery teams. II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical & Diagnostic Duties Microscopic Evaluation: Performs complex microscopic examination and interpretation of tissue biopsies and excisions related to cutaneous diseases. Specialized Testing: Utilizes and interprets ancillary diagnostic tools. These include immunohistochemistry (IHC), special stains, immunofluorescence, and molecular/genetic testing (e.g., FISH, PCR, NGS for melanoma). Clinical Correlation: Correlates histopathologic findings with clinical presentation and photographs to ensure diagnostic accuracy for complex inflammatory and neoplastic dermatoses. Consultations: Provides expert second-opinion consultations on challenging external cases or internal reviews. Turnaround Management: Maintains established laboratory turnaround times for specimen processing and reporting. Administrative & Quality Assurance Quality Control: Participates actively in laboratory Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Improvement (QI) programs. This includes peer-review programs, inter-laboratory comparison programs, and proficiency testing. Compliance: Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory body standards (e.g., CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission). Reporting: Uses the electronic health record (EHR) and laboratory information systems (LIS) to document, verify, and communicate critical and routine findings. Teaching Participates in the education and training of pathology residents. III. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The incumbent works with a high degree of professional independence under the general administrative direction of the Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Diagnostic work is performed independently. Work is reviewed through overall peer metrics, quality assurance outcomes, and adherence to departmental policies.
