Social Worker job description for veterans

A master's degree and a state license stand between a social worker and clinical practice, a bachelor's in social work opens the nonclinical jobs, and every state licenses the clinical kind. Healthcare social workers earned a median of $67,880 in May 2025, above the $61,780 median across social work as a whole, and the bottom tenth of the line came in under $46,220 while the top tenth cleared $100,360. The job is assessment and connection: working out who is vulnerable, helping a patient and a family absorb a diagnosis or a move home, linking them to services that actually exist, and stepping in when a situation turns into a crisis. Hospitals employ 10 percent of the 816,100 social workers counted in 2025 and ambulatory healthcare services another 15 percent. Most of the work is full time, some of it evenings and weekends.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Getting a patient out of a crisis is the first duty. Educating clients about end-of-life symptoms and their options so they can decide for themselves comes second, then collaborating with clinicians to evaluate a patient's condition and assess what they need, then referring patients and families to community resources for financial assistance, legal aid, housing, job placement, or education. Underneath those are the mechanics: identifying what in someone's environment is blocking progress, planning discharge to home or another facility, counseling individually and in groups, organizing family support groups, and recording progress against measurable goals in the care plan.

Common Skills and Technologies

Reading a room is the skill this job runs on, then talking to people and taking their side, then reading closely, listening, thinking critically, and coordinating everyone else on the case. Employers ask for video conferencing by name more than anything else, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, with MEDITECH for the chart and ordinary office software for everything a case needs written down.

Education, Training, and Career Path

Seven in ten hold a master's degree, about one in seven a bachelor's, and roughly one in nine a post-master's certificate, so graduate school is the ordinary path rather than the ambitious one. Two military routes cross into it: Army 73A Social Work, an officer specialty, and enlisted 68X Behavioral Health Specialist. Reported titles follow the service line, oncology, hospice, renal, and nephrology social worker among them.
