Veterans Health Administration careers

The Veterans Health Administration runs 1,380 health care facilities, 170 medical centers and 1,193 outpatient sites among them, which makes it the largest integrated health care system in the United States. More than 9.1 million veterans are enrolled in its care. It's the arm of the Department of Veterans Affairs that delivers that care, and its stated mission fits in one line: honor America's veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being.

More than 371,000 health care professionals and support staff work for VHA, joined by over 25,000 active volunteers. Every medical center provides surgery, critical care, mental health, orthopedics, pharmacy, radiology, and physical therapy, and most add specialty services running from oncology and neurology through dental, geriatrics, and vision care; some go as far as organ transplants. The whole system answers to the Under Secretary for Health, and every medical center staffs patient advocates, a role that exists to resolve concerns about the care experience. It's also the nation's largest provider of graduate medical education and a major contributor to medical research, with about 113,000 health professions trainees and nearly 16,000 affiliated medical faculty moving through the system. If you did clinical training in the United States, there's a decent chance part of it ran through a VA facility.
