State of Michigan careers

Michigan's Constitution of 1963 caps the executive branch at twenty administrative departments, and most state employees work inside them under a comprehensive civil service plan. That structure is genuinely useful to a job seeker: nearly any State of Michigan posting traces back to one of a short, public list of departments, each with a stated mission.

The list covers a lot of ground. Health outcomes and family stability sit with MDHHS; the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy split the conservation and environmental side between them; the State Police and Corrections run law enforcement and the prison system; the Department of State, the oldest in Michigan's government, runs driver and vehicle services and oversees statewide elections; Agriculture and Rural Development, Labor and Economic Opportunity, and Licensing and Regulatory Affairs cover the economic machinery, while Technology, Management and Budget handles the state's own operations. One department deserves a veteran's particular attention: Military and Veterans Affairs runs the Michigan Veteran Homes and the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency alongside the Army and Air National Guard, which makes the state both an employer of veterans and a caretaker of them. Put together, that's Michigan as an employer: one government, about twenty fronts.
