St. Louis County got into public health in 1906, the year it hired its first health officer. Voters approved building the county hospital two decades later, and the county's first permanent health center opened in Kinloch in 1951, setting the pattern it still works from. Three community health centers came out of that: the John C. Murphy Health Center in Berkeley, opened in 1989 and rebuilt in 2012, the South County Health Center on South Lindbergh in 1994, and the North County Community Health Center in Pine Lawn in 2002.
Those three health centers offer family practice, women's health, pediatrics, mental health, nutrition, dental care, and vaccinations, and the same Public Health department puts nurses into corrections medicine and into Nurse-Family Partnership home visits, so the clinical work here reaches well past the clinic door.
