Gila County works out of Globe, with a second office up in Payson, and calls itself the heart of Arizona with some geographic justification. Its 17 communities run from Pine-Strawberry through Rim Country down to the Copper Corridor towns of Globe-Miami and Hayden-Winkelman, spread across 4,796 square miles that climb, in the county's own words, from the desert floor to towering pine forests. The county government covers the standard Arizona county slate, from the assessor, courts, and county attorney to community development and animal care, for 53,500 residents scattered across mountain country.
