El Paso County became a territorial county in 1861, fifteen years before Colorado was a state. Its seat is Colorado Springs, and its 2,158 square miles, about twice the area of Rhode Island, climb from roughly 5,095 feet at Black Squirrel Creek to the 14,110 foot summit of Pikes Peak. The county serves the Pikes Peak region with public services spanning infrastructure, public safety, family services, and recreation, and its own numbers put it past 750,000 residents, the most populous county in Colorado.
