Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) job description

120 verified openings in Emergency & First Response

The EMT scope is basic emergency care: assess how bad the injury or illness is, prioritize what to do, treat and stabilize the patient where they are lying, and get them to an emergency department with a record the receiving clinicians can use. Ambulance services employ 46 percent of the field's 181,900 jobs, local government 24 percent, and hospitals most of the rest. The work runs outdoors in all weather and is physically strenuous, which is the Handbook's own plain description of it. Median pay was $44,470 in May 2025, with the lowest tenth under $34,130 and the highest over $62,500. The pay case for going further up the ladder is the next certification: paramedics earned $60,600 at the median that same month.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Calls come through a dispatcher, and a real part of the job is the radio traffic around them: telling the treatment center what is arriving, arranging reception, taking instructions for further treatment on the way in. On scene, EMTs administer first aid and life support in the prehospital setting, work alongside police and fire crews, and comfort and reassure the patient while they do it. Documentation follows every call, and so does recurring class time, because the certification has to be kept current.

Common Skills and Technologies

Named software is thin: MEDITECH on the hospital records side, and Microsoft Office, the one entry O*NET marks in demand. The equipment is the ambulance and what it carries, and the certification level decides how much of it an EMT may touch; the intermediate certificate adds advanced airway devices, intravenous fluids, and some medications that the basic one does not authorize. The rest is human: crew and dispatcher coordination, plain speech under pressure, and reassurance.

Education, Training, and Career Path

Getting in takes a postsecondary emergency medical program, typically under a year for EMT-Basic and up to two years at the intermediate level. Every state licenses, most of them on top of national certification, with age minimums and background checks layered on state by state. O*NET Job Zone Three is where the occupation lands, the band for work built on vocational training or an associate degree. No military job crosses into civilian healthcare more directly than the Army's 68W combat medic, which the Military Crosswalk ties to EMT work along with paramedic, practical nursing, and medical records occupations.
