Kings County exists because voters said so: in 1893 they approved carving a piece off northern Tulare County to make one. Before that, by the county's own account, a huge sycamore known as the Landmark tree stood on Lacey Boulevard as a beacon for settlers crossing an otherwise barren valley floor. The Kings County Government Center sits on that same road today, at 1400 W. Lacey Blvd in Hanford, running a county of 151,018 people spread over 1,392 square miles.
Behavioral Health is a standing Kings County department, so its clinician roles are county positions rather than hospital ones.
